I am loving reading through a Psalm every day. The other day I read Psalm 37. Verses 1-9, I felt, were given to me as mine to meditate on and pray through.
Encouraged by my journey through Ruth the other week I decided to break it down for myself. I figured you may like to do the same, and I know I’ll want to find it again, so instead of scribbling it down on a random scrap of paper I’m breaking it down here, then I will pray it.
Hope this blesses you. I find when the Holy Spirit is convicting me of something, (which is often) if I pray through specific scripture, I am less likely to go off on a tangent. God always extrapolates things as I do, and the word gets into me as I pray it.
It’s more like a meal this way. It satisfies whatever hunger pangs I might have, and I am less tempted to repeat whatever it was I was doing. In this case envying others.
Verse 1 says,
Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong
Points – fretting, envy.
My Prayer; Lord you see things from an eternal perspective, give me eternal, discerning eyes when I look at other people. Do not let me be deceived. Give me your eyes. Where there could be envy or regret or desire, wherever I might be “painting pictures of Egypt, leaving out what it lacked, *” let the joy of the Lord be my strength and my desire.
Any fretting, any thought stuck on repeat in my head, I take it captive and release it to you. You say, “my thoughts are not your thoughts”, give me the mind of Christ. May I put the joy of the Lord higher than the joy of this world. Where I am tempted to judge or doubt your goodness to me or doubt my worth or the power of your spirit at work in me, I ask you to give me the mind of Christ, who said, “Not my will but your will be done,” and teach me your ways.
Verse 2 says,
For like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
Points – Things not of God will not last
My Prayer; God this was me, I was dying away, and you saved me. Thank you. Give me your compassion and mercy for people. These people need you, my envy does nothing but destroy hope. But you bring hope. You defeated death. For all those who are where I was, without you, Lord have mercy on them. Reveal yourself in love as you did to me, be gracious to others like you were to me and let me love them too. Let me never put your light under a bowl but let me shine for you.
Verse 3 says,
Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Points – Trust, do good, dwell, enjoy
My Prayer; I trust you Lord, I trust you with myself, I trust you with others. We are all in your hands. Give me good to do. Open my eyes to what you want me to do and quicken my feet and hands to do it. Let me be “Nike” about it. Let me never cease doing good, never not do something that would help or bring blessing to another person if it is in my power to do.
I make my home with you. I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, thank you for the safety that brings. Thank you that life with you is life to the full. Don’t let me compromise that fullness by taking my eyes off you. I believe that you are with me always, so I will not fear, I will smile! I will laugh! I will celebrate this life! I will rejoice!
Verse 4 says,
Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Points – delight in Lord = satisfied heart
My Prayer; Lord Your burden is light, your yoke is easy, and you are the light of the world; my light and my lightness. Lighten my soul, lighten my spirit, lighten my body towards you, let all of me be light as you are my delight. You know my heart’s deepest desires better than I know them, even the ones I have not yet conceived. I place them in your hands and I trust you with them. Not of this earth may I desire anything, as I desire you.
Verse 5 says,
Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in Him and he will do this.
Points – Commit, trust, He will do it.
My Prayer; Lord all my ways, let them be your ways. You say, I am the Way. I am the Truth and I am the Life. So, I commit my life to you, any plans I make let them be yours first. Let me listen for my plans rather than tell you my plans. I trust you with all my ways, I trust you with myself, I trust you with my family I trust you with my life, I trust you with others. Even when it does not look like you are doing anything I trust in you. I repent, and I believe. I trust you will do it.
Verse 6 says,
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
Points – no need to blow our own trumpet or God’s, he will blow it himself, we need to be faithful, he will reward and vindicate us for His glory.
My Prayer; The sun is really obvious, no one can miss it, it makes the plants grow or wither, it has a clear course across the sky. Lord let me be faithful that you might show the world who you are, because you are my reward, brighter than the sun. I praise you Lord, you are my vindication.
Verse 7 says,
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Points – be still, be patient, don’t fret
My Prayer; Lord still my heart, Holy Spirit come fill me. You are worthy of praise, you are worthy, you are Holy, you thwart the plans of the wicked, you work all things together for the good of those who love you. I will be still and know you are God.
Verse 8 says,
Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret – it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.
Points – hold back your anger, repent of wrath, don’t fret, hope instead.
My Prayer; You are slow to anger and abounding in Love, put your spirit in me. I turn from wrath. ‘Revenge is mine,’ says the Lord. But Lord have mercy on those who you would destroy, turn their hearts to you instead, give them hope and let them inherit the land, like you did for me.
If you have been encouraged to pray this with me, please know that I am praying with you. Leave a prayer request in the comments below whenever you like. Be encouraged that God hears our prayers. Our prayers are powerful and effective when we confess and pray for each other.
Be blessed, as you trust in Him, and commit your ways to him today.
Lots of Love,
